Three Is A Crowd

Flyers and Sixers clinch playoff berths and Phillies get to .500 with win

Just a week ago we witnessed a quadruple whammy with all four Philly teams losing on the same night. And, on Friday night the worm turned and our squads made a complete 180.

Not only did the Flyers and Sixers clinch playoff berths, but the Phillies defeated the Reds to get to 2-2. Now, it doesn't sound like much, but lets remember this is the same Phillies team which has gotten off to horrific starts for what seems like every year for the past decade.

Like I said last week, just what are the odds of four of our teams playing on the same night and losing? Well, what are the odds of two of them clinching playoff spots on the same night and another one winning? They have to be astronomical.

First, the Flyers knocked off the Devils 3-0 and from the opening moments you just knew the Flyers wanted this game more than the Devils. They hit, hit, and hit some more. And, they attacked Marty Brodeur relentlessly. Although, they had just a 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd period, it was clear they weren't going to lose.

And, meanwhile the Sixers took care of business down in Atlanta, defeating them 109-104. Andre Iguodala had a monster game-knocking down 30 points and it included the final 10 points of the game.

So it went...the Flyers and Sixers both clinched playoff berths within minutes of one another.

The Phillies got off to a late start with an hour and a half rain delay in Cincy and once they got rolling, Kyle Kendrick stepped up with a nice game and helped lead the Phils to a W. I was a little nervous about KK's prospects heading into the season with a lousy spring and the possible sophomore slump, but it was refreshing to see him pitch well.

So far this year, it's the best night of the year for our squads. You don't get too many of these in Philly.
