Opening Day

Phillies open their season today against the Nationals

The Phillies will open their season today against the Nats, who played MLB's second season-opener last night against the Braves. And, before I get into this, what the hell is major league baseball thinking?

First, they have a dumbass two-game series between Oakland of all teams against the Red Sox. Ok, if you are going to have a series in Japan why not make it an exhibition first off? And, secondly why match up the A's and the Red Sox? There's no rivalry there! Now, Yankees-Red Sox in Japan, that I can see plus you have Japanese players on BOTH teams that have name recognition here and there.

And, on top of that they had this 2-game series in Japan while EVERYBODY else in baseball was still in pre-season.

For that to be the season opener is a joke. I could give a damn about what MLB's presence is like in Japan. It's as bad as the NFL starting to have games abroad and pushing for a 17-game schedule. Here's a message to the NFL and MLB, most Americans don't give a damn about putting the games on an international stage. They are American sports and that's where we want the games.

Moving along, why the hell is Major League Baseball making the Braves and Nationals play a one-game series for the other season opener? You know the one that should have been the real season opener in friggin' America. If you're going to have the Braves and Nationals face off in the season opener, why not have them play a 3-game series? I understand they're trying to pimp out the Nats new stadium on TV, but make it a 3-game series! Just another example of why Major League Baseball is second fiddle to the NFL. Bud Selig is a complete moron and his flunkies beneath him aren't doing a much better job of marketing the game. AND, MARKET THE GAME HERE TO AMERICAN KIDS. It's so fundamental. No, they'd rather put friggin' Viagara ads behind home plate on their national games on Fox. Brilliant.

Ok, now that I'm done my rant about the piss poor marketing of MLB, let's talk some Phillies. Everybody knows they're a good team. But, how good are they?

I see them winning 90 games right now and winning the division. And, that's with questions on starting pitching. If they make a move or two to add a quality starter and bullpen depth, then they can seriously win 100 games and win it all. Right now, they'll compete in the NL and even with issues at the 3rd, 4th, 5th starters and bullpen they'll win 90. Their offense is that good. And, Hamels and Myers will win 35 games between them.

Now, the 3 through 5 starter spots are issues. Kendrick has been shaky and looks to be suffering a sophomore slump. He could very well pitch himself out of the rotation. And, that's scary. Moyer is a 5-6 inning pitcher. And, the 5th starter spot is a disaster as we all know. Hell, I just posted an Adam Eaton auction on ebay to display my disgust with him!

Kris Benson is said to be coming back soon, but how soon? Charlie Manuel said he expects him back in May, so that means Eaton Feces will pitch a few games and we just gotta hope for the offense to carry the team.

All in all, I see them beating out the Mets once again, even with Santana. Let's not forget that Pedro Martinez is a lot older and not the same pitcher he once was and even when he was in his prime he'd have DL stints. Santana and Maine are their only reliable pitchers when you come down to it, just like Hamels and Myers are the Phillies' only reliable options. Pound for pound, I'll take the Phillies sqaud over theirs.

There you have it.

Quadruple Whammy

Flyers, Sixers, Phillies, and Nova all lose last night

What are the odds that the stars could have been aligned like they were last night? There were four Philadelphia teams playing last night...well five if you count the Phantoms, but all three pro teams played (The Phillies in exhibition) and Nova played Kansas in the Sweet 16.

Now, what are the odds that all four teams can lose in one night? I'd say you'd have as good of a chance as winning big at the casinos. Well, only in Philly can this happen. All four lost in one evening! Hell, you can't script stuff like this in movies.

First, we'll turn to the Sixers. They didn't even show up for this game and were dead from the door and were down 38-19 at the end of the first quarter. The Suns blew them away like Anton Chigurgh blew away countless victims in "No Country For Old Men."

Next, we'll turn to the Flyers against the Devils in that dump of a stadium in Jersey. They lost in a shootout. I'm certainly not shocked they lost in a shootout, but the Flyers have been playing better in OT and shootout situations. Fact of the matter is the Devils own them; they lost in Jersey for the 12 straight time.

The Phillies were in Philly for the first time last night, hosting the Blue Jays. They lost 3-1. And, they've kicked everybody in the nuts by stating Eaton will be their 5th starter to open the season. Thankfully he won't take the hill for a few weeks because of a 4-man rotation to start the season.

And, finally Villanova tipped off against Kansas just before 10:00 PM and they were overmatched from the door. Kansas probably could have obliterated them if they wanted to, but showed some mercy and beat them by only 15 points. I honestly thought Nova had a chance to keep it close. Heck, I put money on them to cover. Boy, I was wrong.

So, there you have it. Four of our teams laid turds in one evening. It was such a great week up until this point-nearly a perfect week, but when do things always go right in Philly? It's been 25 years since that happened.

Weekly Wrap-Up

Weekly Wrap-Up
Iron Mike would have a lot of good things to say about our squads right now

Good times in Philly. Just a month and a half ago, things were looking rather bleak. Since then the Sixers have become the talk of the town, the Flyers have managed to stay in it and are playing very well heading into the playoffs, the Eagles signed Asante Samuel, and the Phillies-well lets not talk about them.

Who better to gift wrap everything for you this week then the master of butchering the English language like Idi Amin butchered his people, the ferocious Iron Mike Tyson!

I'm Mike Tyson and I've been given the opportunity to give you the straight up new s**t on what's new with the squads in Philly.

The Sixers have been demonstrative. They've been playing with a felicity and pretentsity that I aint f***ing seen since when I knocked that motherf***r out at the bar that one time. Oh wait, I aint supposed to be talking about that. But, whatever. You can't count out this Sixers team never. They dismantled the Celtics in the 4th quarter like a lion divulges a leopard on the Serengeti. They f****d up the Spurs and made them their bitches. And, the Suns were no match for them either. They have the heart of Zeus, the hunger of King Kang Bundee, and the bite of a black mamba. If you come in their house, they'll f**k you til they love you.

The Flyers. S**t I don't know a motherf***ing thing about hockey, but I will say one word describes them. Impregnant. They have the ultimatum of Jason Vorhees and when they cut, they slice like a f***ing hammer. You see that dude who had his throat slashed by one them...oh wait s**t that was another game I saw that jawn on youtube. Nevermind, they be tight though. Motherf***rs better watch out now when you in a battle with them. I knocked cats out in 30 seconds. They be knockin' cats out in 3 seconds. I'd be scared like a little white boy if I had to go toe to toe with the Flyers.

And, the Phillies the pitchers be lacking moxone you know they don't have that inner hunger, like when I used to bum rush motherf***rs in the ring back in '86. You know s**t be f***ed up when you have 3 of your 5 starters getting overwhelmingly. They need to be more ostentatious with their training and the same goes for the rest of the team. They look a few steps off. If they start out 10-15 again, then they gonna be chasing the Mets and then it's gonna make it pontifcatingly worse in the long run. So, that's my take on the Phillies.

The Eagles. Get a #1 wide receiver. I could outrun Reggie Brown and Greg Lewis. Kevin Curtis alright, but he's not as imperturbable as a tight end should be. But, seriously McNabb needs to step up and be a man and bitch slap the owner and President and make them get a damn #1 receiver. He's as impetuous as a millipede sometimes and it makes me wanna go up to him and say, "Donovan yo, you need to man up."

That's all now. Til next time Iron Mike say, don't let life get you down. You gotta be tuff and impregnant. And, I wanna give a shoutout to my man Pacman Jones. Go to his Grey Goose party this Sunday.

If you don't then you is a bitch.

Alright, we done here.

Miller Time

Andre Miller dishes out 18 assists in leading Sixers to romp over Bulls

The Bulls were lassoed last night 121-99 at the Wach with relative ease. The Sixers' fast break was simply too much and their swarming defense shut down a Bulls team that is ready to go fishing and obviously not thinking about playing basketball.

You can attribute this one to Andre Miller's 18 assists. Even though he had just 9 points he probably couldn't have been happier to dish out 18 assists and to blow the Bulls out.

He cares about one thing and that's winning and passing second. Scoring comes a distant third for the Sixers' floor general.

Lou Williams led all scorers with 23 points and the other usual suspects showed up as well. Andre Iguodala and Thaddeus Young knocked in 21 and 20 points respectively.

The Bulls were never in this game and from the door the Sixers took the lead and never gave it up.

They are idle tonight and will host the Suns on Friday night.

Official changes at WIP are in

Ok, the word is that Glen Macnow is still moving to afternoon's to co-host the mid-day show with Anthony Gargano. And, Eskin will still be doing his show alone.

The interesting dynamic is that Macnow will be facing off against his former co-host Jody MacDonald, who will do his mid-day show on 950 AM, which was formerly WPEN 950 and is now 950 ESPN.

It seems that the now 950 ESPN station is going with a mix of Philly personalities and ESPN hosts. I don't know what the hell they're thinking with Mike Tirico though. He's too bland for Philly.

Not that I'd ever consider switching from WIP, because they are just simply great at what they do, but anytime I've ever tried to tune into 950 to just see what they had to stay the station was nearly all static.

If you want to try and gain some listeners, try improving your reach. Just a suggestion.

I give this station two years before it becomes another ESPN station and stops trying to compete with WIP for Philly sports talk. Face it, WIP is too good. The propaganda being put out there by 950's accolytes is that they no longer talk sports on WIP. This couldn't be further from the truth.

Once in a while Eskin will devote a show or consecutive shows by talking about Obama, but on the most part he along with the other hosts talk sports. 950 wants you to believe otherwise, because well that's their only hope in trying to pry away listeners.

One Step Closer

One Step Closer

Flyers defeat the Rangers in overtime to make it one step further to the playoffs

Don't look now, but your Philadelphia Flyers are on a roll again. They have now strung off four consecutive wins and each of the wins have been dramatic.

They didn't dissapoint again in the drama department last night, winning 2-1 in overtime.

The Flyers are now 7th place in the Eastern Conference with 88 points and are 4 points ahead of the Washington Capitals, with just 3 games to go. You can all but count them in. It would take two losses by the Flyers and two wins for the Capitals to tie them. So, the Flyers control their own destiny.

Briere has been rejuvenated with the addition of Vinny Prospal; the two have combined for 11 goals over the past 13 contests. Prospal has filled in admirably for Gagne and you can chalk this up to GM Paul Holmgren for getting somebody in here to help Briere.

Looks like we'll have both of our winter sports team in the playoffs. And, that hasn't happened in two years for the Flyers and it's been three years since the 6ers have made it to the postseason.

---------------------------------------

Reason #1 why I hope the Cowboys sign Pacman Jones

He is planning on having a Grey Goose party if he gets reinstated. And, this fool was quoted as saying, he'll let it rain.

What a complete ass. And, for those who say the Eagles should go after him. Are you kidding me? Do you see how much thugging out goes on in Philly. I predict if the Eagles were to sign him, the murder rate would increase 10 percent!

----------------------------------------

Big shakeups at 610 WIP

Mid-day host Steve Martorano was on for the last time yesterday and today Glen Macnow is doing the midday show. Looks like Anthony Gargano will join Eskin in the afternoons.

This looks like a response to 950 AM's move to put Mike Missanelli (recently hired from ESPN) on against Eskin at 3-7.

Personally, I like Macnow in the evenings and will miss hearing him as much since I can only listen briefly during the day at work. I think Eskin could handle Missanelli on his own, but it will be interesting to hear he and "The Cuz" work together.

Big Time Win

Sixers come back from 11 down in 4th quarter to top Celtics

Finally, the Sixers have defeated the Celtics this year; the Eastern Conferences version of the San Antonio Spurs, who also happen to have the best record in the NBA.

The Sixers also knocked off the Spurs. And, they beat the Suns, Mavericks, and Pistons as well. It appeared that the 76ers were going to lose another one to the Celtics when they were down by 11 in the fourth quarter, but then the Celtics went stone cold when the Sixers simultaneously stepped up their D to another level-a playoff level.

Samuel Dalembert and Andre Iguodala were keys on that 19-0 run. Dalembert battled with Garnett, while Iguodala made big play after big play.

Yes, the upstart Sixers have defeated other good teams, but this one was a coming of age win. They did on Boston's home court and with their backs against the wall they just made it happen.

I liken this victory to the Eagles' "Pickle Juice" game in their season-opener against the Cowboys in the 2000 season. That win was a statement and it meant the Eagles were back on the rise.

Last night Philadelphia's next hope for a championship told the NBA loud and clear that they're on the way up and they will be there for a while. This is one of the greatest parts of sports, seeing a young team on the ascent. It's almost as good as the beginning of a budding relationship.

With last night's win, the Sixers jumped to 6th in the Eastern Conference with a 36-35 record. This also happens to be the first time they've been over .500 in three years. They have eleven games remaining and can conceivably go 9-2 or 8-4. They face Chicago, Phoenix, Cleveland, Jersey, Atlanta in back to back nights, Detroit, Indiana, Washington, Cleveland, and end the season at Charlotte. Phoenix, Detroit, and Cleveland are all tough games; the rest are easily winnable.

Get ready for the ride to the top. It's going to be fun. Welcome the Sixers as the new hope for Philly.

Nova gets Sweet

Villanova advances to Sweet 16 with dominant win over Siena

Who would have thought that the Wildcats would be the Big 5 team to make it into the sweet 16? A lot of people including myself pegged Temple as the team that would make it. And, many liked St. Joe's. But, Nova? Unless you're an alum you probably didn't see them making it very far.

Heck, they were a bubble team and weren't seen as even making the tournament on Selection Sunday.

But, they willed their way to victory against Clemson on Friday night and dominated Siena yesterday and will go up against number one seeded Kansas in the Sweet 16.

St. Joe's fans no doubt want to see Nova lose. The rivalry between St. Joe's and Nova students is approaching Duke-UNC territory.

With me being a Temple alum I root for whoever makes it the furthest. So, with that said, go Wildcats!

Hell, at this point I'll take an NCAA championship and be satisfied. Our four pro teams are approaching the quarter century mark with their titleless drought. To quote a character from the movie, "Network" I'll bastardize the line a bit.

This is a whorehouse sports world, I'll take whatever championship I can get.

-----------------------------------------------

Back to Life?

Flyers win three straight as season winds down

It appears as though the Flyers are back to life. For now anyway.

They've run off three straight wins against Atlanta (who they always beat), New York, and the Islanders (who they own this year). Now, they head on the road against the Rangers, Devils, and Islanders. Sooner or later, their luck will have to run out against the Islanders.

But, maybe just maybe they have their number this year. I don't see them beating the Devils though unless Martin Brodeur blows out a knee during the game...not that it would be a bad thing. And, with them just coming off a win against the Rangers, that's an L too. Look for the Flyers to go 1-2 on this mini road trip.

Hopefully that will be enough to get them in. Not that they'll go anywhere; this team needs a franchise goaltender to win a cup and they don't grow on trees.

If I were GM Paul Holmgren, I would trade Gagne, Briere, 3 1st round picks, and a prospect to Calgary for their stud goaltender Kiprusoff.

It's going to take a king's ransom to get a franchise goalie and that's what the Flyers will have to give up to get one.

Otherwise, you can forget about a Stanley Cup from this team.

When it comes down to it, Biron and Nitty aren't even close to good enough.

Nova Advances

Nova comes back from 18 down to become the only Big 5 team to advance to 2nd round

Honestly I didn't see the second half of this game. I was whooped by the time 10:30 rolled around and woke up to find out that Nova bounced back from 18 down to defeat Clemson. After watching another disappointing game in St. Joe's and my seeing my alma mater Temple lose on Thursday I wrote Nova off after their slow start.

But, they hung in there and played into the wee hours and around 1:00 in the morning became the only Big 5 squad to advance. Kudos to Jay Wright and the Wildcats.

Nova will face 13th seeded Siena, who pulled off an upset over Vanderbilt in the first round. In fact, yesterday was the first time in Tournament history that all four underdog teams in one stadium (in Tampa) won their opening round games.

-------------------------------------

A Miracle Occurs

The Flyers win a shootout over the Rangers!

I was watching this game at the bar last night with some friends and expected them to blow it in the final 30 seconds like they've often done this year. And, they actually blew it with a few minutes left.

Then, the game went into overtime and they survived. But, I couldn't take it anymore and left the bar. I was not going to put myself through another Flyers shootout.

Maybe me leaving the ole pub was what the Fly guys needed. Because once I left the shootout goals started pouring in and before I was halfway home I heard on the radio that they won the game.

I called my buddy up (who claimed the Flyers only won two shootouts over the past three seasons) and I was happier than a pig in you know what.

I'm going to have to research the number of shootouts the Flyers have won, but I'm willing to put some money up that it was more than three (after last night's win) despite how horrific they've been at it.

Story Book Night

Sixers defeat the Nuggets 115-113 in a thriller

This game couldn't have been any more enjoyable from start to finish. It truly was a masterpiece. From the pre-game introduction with Iverson being greeted with a loud applause and retorting towards the crowd with his trademark "hand to the ear" move to the opening moments, mid-game, and the end it was chock full of action.

There were more lead changes than hoagies being served at a Slack's Hoagie Shack. And, all of the usual suspects delivered. Both Andres, Sammy D, and of course Iverson delivered in big ways.

The Sixers couldn't have done it without Andre Miller though, who brought his A-game.

This game had the makings of a shootout from the first period and while it wasn't quite like the Denver-Detroit game from the other night, it was still very exciting.

I felt privileged to have watched a game like this last night and the pre-game intro really sent chills down my spine. And, it was a satisfying win over an offensive juggernaut.

Most importantly, it was good to see Allen Iverson give a little something back to the fans who supported him for so many years.

Yes-he was bad for the team in many ways, but (read my comments yesterday) the fact remains he was an electrifying athlete. And, for those of you who like sports for the entertainment aspect, he delivered in that department for 10 years and continues to do so; it's just not winning basketball, which is what I care about more ultimately.

I still like the Sixers a good deal better with Andre Miller running the show. He looks like a very capable point guard, one capable of leading this team to a championship once they have some more pieces in place. Yes, he's 32 years old, but that Nash fellow in Phoenix is still playing at a high level. And, don't forget John Stockton, who played for 19 seasons. And, even in his 19th season, he was still a quality point.

But, a great win last night for Philadelphia's new hope for a title in the next few years. The Sixers are going to only get better and now stand at .500 for the first time this late in the season in two years.

He's Back

Allen Iverson will return to Philly for first time since the trade

One question I've yet to hear asked is, why did the NBA schedule this game so late in the season? You'd think a game such as this would have been put on the slate earlier in the schedule. Heck, it's been nearly a year and a half since Iverson was traded and he's just now returning to Philly.

Just my thoughts on that.

With that said, the timing couldn't be better because the Nuggets are going to be on a back to back, having played the Pistons last night and losing in a shoot out for the ages. The Pistons beat them 136-120.

One thing is certain about the Sixers and Nuggets after this trade. The Sixers are a better team and the Nuggets are no better or no worse. They can't play a lick of defense and will go nowhere. And, the Sixers will continue to get better and play a team game, while improving on defense. I predict the Sixers will be back in the Eastern Conference hunt starting next season.

Iverson brought us many unforgettable moments as a player. He will go down as one of the 25 greatest players ever regardless of what his critics say. He is one of the few greats who didn't make the players around him better though. That's a fact. And, it's on his own accord. He remains an enigma. Just imagine how good he could be if he became a team-oriented point guard.

He chose not to. It's been well acknowledged that his downfall as an athlete is that it became all about himself and his iconic status. And, when I say downfall I mean not becoming a top 10 player all time and winning a championship by modifying his game.

He's that good. Who knows? Maybe when he gets into his mid-30's he'll finally "get it."

Tonight we're in for a hell of a show though. Iverson will and should be greeted with cheers. I'm over the bad things he did in terms of bullying the front office and not practicing. I'm over the lousy ending when he quit on the team. If I were at the game I'd be cheering him.

He was the most electrifying athlete in Philly over the past 25 years. Even more so than Mr. Randall Cunningham.

---------------------------------------

Eagles to give Earl Bennett a private workout

Don't get too excited about this one. The Eagles are going to give former Vanderbilt wideout Earl Bennett a private workout.

The scouting report on Bennett is that he lacks elusiveness and explosiveness. And, he's not particularly big.

Great, they can draft another bust, jagoff, or chump-to quote the great fans on the Igglephans.com message board.

The Eagles have done nothing to convince me they will ever draft a quality wide receiver. What makes you think they can? In 9 seasons during Andy Reid's tenure the best they could muster was Reggie Brown.

I don't want the Eagles spending any more than a 4th round pick on a receiver at this point. I just can't trust their shoddy scouting on wideouts.

In Trouble?

Phillies starting pitching is a serious issue

I'm going to predict the Phillies will win 88 games this season. And, not because I don't think they can't win 90 to 95 games or 100 games (a long shot). But, I am realistic. Look at their starting rotation.

Hamels and Myers are the only proven, dependable options. After that you have an aging Jamie Moyer who leaked oil at times last season. Then, you have Kyle Kendrick, who is a low strikeout pitcher, and young pitchers who can't strike batters out historically don't fare to well. And, the 5th starter, whoever that may be is a bigger disaster than the delapidated column under the I95 bridge on Port Richmond.

2/5 of their starting rotation you can truly count on. You can count on Moyer about 60% of the time because he is no spring chicken. And, Kendrick you really have no idea what you'll get. So far this spring he's showing serious signs of an impending sophomore slump. And, Kris Benson is being held back a week now because of soreness in his bicep-never a good thing this early on.

We didn't even get to the bullpen yet. Brad Lidge, while very talented and capable, did get injured on the first pitch of spring training. And, Tom Gordon's labrum is hanging together by threads. Ryan Madson has only been consistent for one season (2004) and a stretch of 2005. This leaves J.C. Romero as the only true, dependable option. And, remember he was a train wreck before last year.

I have serious concerns about the pitching staff as a whole. And, I don't see this ownership ponying up any more money, because their payroll is approaching $110 million, which all but means they won't be guaranteed a precious profit over this season no matter what.

Again, they should win at least 88 games because they have so many elite players, but they have a lot of holes too. Don't forget that Santana guy in blue and orange who resides up the turnpike. He's going to make the Mets an immediate World Series contender, because he is the best pitcher in the bigs right now.

Many things will have to go right for the Phillies to win above 90 games and they've been looking for that every year since 1993.

---------------------------------------------

Klecko to be a fullback experiment

Ok, all of you who love smash mouth football, don't count your chickens before they hatch.

The Eagles and Dan Klecko both admit this will be an experiment. This will mark the first time in his career he'll be a full-time NFL fullback.

And, we all know that experiments don't go so well sometimes with the Eagles (i.e. Jeremy Bloom).

Let's see how he does in camp before annoiting him the next 4th down masher.

----------------------------------------------

Sixers set to raise ticket prices

Well, you knew this would eventually come. The Sixers wouldn't dare raise the already high prices on their tickets during the past four seasons because people were walking away.

Now, that the interest is starting to perk up and people are coming back they're raising prices of season tickets an average 4.4% and floor seats will go up an average of 8.9%.

Chances are they wanted to raise prices for a while now because the team has been losing tons of money, thanks to Billy King's foolish spending. I'm willing to bet they waited until a good feeling started to abound. Why would you raise ticket prices when your team is at rock bottom like it was last season and into early this season?

Going Dancing

Three Big 5 teams make the NCAA Tournament

Just a few weeks ago most people, including myself were beginning to wonder if any of the Big 5 teams would make the NCAA Tourny.

What a difference a few weeks make. The surprise of the three has to be Villanova, who while having a tough schedule, didn't exactly help their case any down the stretch by laying an egg against Georgetown in the Big East tournament.

St. Joe's and Temple played each other in the A-10 final, and that secured their spots in March Madness.

Here are the match-ups for all three in the first round:

Nova plays Clemson.

St. Joe's plays Oklahoma.

Temple plays Michigan State.

All three teams are beatable, but the odds are we won't see all three teams advance. Nova and St. Joe's are 11th seeds and Temple is a 12th seed, but at least one of them should advance. I'm putting my money on Temple. I'm a little biased though because I am a Temple alum and rooting for them.

--------------------------------------------

Free-falling Flyers fall to Penguins 7-1

The latest train wreck in Philadelphia sports, the Flyers have lost 4 in a row now. It's safe to say that the players are quitting on John Stevens, who should've never been hired in the first place. In fact, Ken Hitchcock should still be the coach.

This team is deader than a victim on CSI. They had a 10-game losing streak and are now back to their losing ways, with a 4-game swoon that began with a pair of meltdowns against Toronto, a meltdown on Saturday, and a blowout yesterday.

There are 9 games remaining on the season, but it looks to be too late. The Flyers should do what the Devils did a few years back (when Devils GM Lou Lamoriello coached in the playoffs) and fire John Stevens and install Paul Holmgren as the coach to finish out the season.

And, then maybe they can get an NHL coach in there next year, because Stevens just doesn't cut it.

Judging by Paul Holmgren's comments, he may just cut the cord on Stevens any day now.

"This time of year, it [falls] on the coaches, and it's got to come down to the players themselves," he said. "They're the ones who are going out there and playing. We're all in this together. We haven't done very well here lately. . . . We're not getting the push we need to put us over the hump right now, for whatever reason."

----------------------------------------------

New Eagles assistant should be a huge addition

There are many ways an NFL team can improve these days. Via free agency (not as much with many elites getting franchised), through the draft, trades, and hiring of coaches.

One guy who could really make an impact on offense won't even set foot on the field and that's offensive assistant Mark Whipple.

Mark Eckel gives the low-down in the Trenton Times today on this former Steelers offensive coach and Whipple is an offensive guru. Just look what he did for Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger.

This up and coming coach could become the next Jon Gruden as he has a great pedigree and could be the future offensive coordinator for the Eagles. It's all about reloading in the NFL in all facets of the game and the Eagles have taken a hit in recent years on their coaching staff. Whipple will help them tremendously.

Booted

The Sixers defeat the Spurs 103-96

No, you are not seeing things. Your Philadelphia 76ers knocked off the San Antonio Spurs last night, giving them their third straight win.

And, don't look now, but they're just one game under .500 with a 33-34 record. And, if that's not good enough for you they're 15-4 over their past 19 games.

Forget this talk about securing a spot in the playoffs. The Sixers are just 4 1/2 games behind Cleveland for the #4 seed. While, that's a longer shot, they can very much secure the 5th seed, as they're just 2 games behind Toronto for that spot. Right now, they stand one game behind Washington for the 6th seed.

It's going to be a wild and fun race towards the finish line in these last 15 games.

Andre Miller, the key player acquired in the Iverson trade (whom will return to Philly for the first time on Wednesday) had a season-high 32 points. The other A.I.-Andre Iguodala had 25 of his.

And, how could you not enjoy Sammy D's block on Tim Duncan down the stretch?

No longer can we dismiss the Sixers as a team that feeds on the ham and eggers and teams on back to backs. They're beating legit teams. Detroit. Phoenix. San Antonio. They are all victims of the Sixers' wrath.

Yes, people the 76ers are for real. Buckle your seat-belts, because it's going to be a fun ride.

Flyers blow another one with under 30 seconds left

I was watching this game with my buddy yesterday at the pub in town and had a bad feeling. Watching the Flyers anymore is like watching a horror flick. When the unsuspecting girl goes into the bathroom, you just know what's in store for her. Well, when the Flyers have a one-goal lead in the final minute you just have a bad feeling they're going to blow it.

It's like the feeling you get when you eat some improperly cooked meat at a picnic, then the rumbling in your stomach starts up and it sounds like a creaky battleship. That's the Flyers for you.

In honor of their amazing ability to blow leads, I challenge you to take the Flyers Magic 8 Ball challenge.

Just ask the 8 Ball at this link, if the Flyers will lose (insert # of games) with 30 seconds left and it will tell you!

Owls Win

Temple wins A-10 Tournament, defeating St. Joe's 69-64

They did it with suffocating defense and clutch shooting tonight. The upstart Temple Owls, led by Penn import Fran Dunphy have done the unthinkable and that's win the A-10 Tournament.

They will now be in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001.

The Owls were led by Dionte Christmas' 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting. On the other side, St. Joe's star guard Pat Calthes couldn't really ever get it going and had just 14 points and was held to just 5 buckets on 13 attempts.

Now, what does this mean for St. Joe's? Tough to tell right now, but the odds are they'll still be in the tournament since they have 4 wins against schools that are in the Top 50 of the RPI and when it comes down to the bubble teams the RPI reigns supreme.

Dream Scenario

St. Joe's and Temple set to face off in A-10 Final

<

You hear that loud sigh? That's the collective sound of Philadelphia, St. Joe's, and Temple fans who have breathed a sigh of relief that not only a Philly team will represent in the Tourny, but everybody's dream scenario will play out tonight.

The Hawks stepped up big with a win over Xavier in the semis, while Temple knocked off Charlotte.

Things couldn't have worked out any better. Now, we can all breathe a sigh of relief as there will certainly be a Big 5 team in the NCAA Tournament. The question is will both teams get in?

If Temple wins, they're definitely in and St. Joe's will be a likely team, although not a definite. But, if St. Joe's wins they're in and Temple is less likely to be in.

As a Temple grad I have to root for the Owls. But, I'd love to see both get in.

-------------------------------------------

Sixers pull off another shocker

The Sixers are becoming basketball's version of the cardiac kids. They erased an 18-point deficit last night to defeat the Bulls in Chi-town.

Rodney Carney stepped up again with 18 points (12 in the fourth quarter). And, Andre Iguodala also stepped up in the fourth quarter with 11 of his 25 coming in the final stanza.

The Sixers are inching closer and closer to the big .500 mark, which would be an achievement for a franchise that was though to be moribund back in December when Billy King got the axe.

My, my, my how things can change in a few months. Yes, Ed Snider, we're starting to care again. If you win, they'll come back.

Weekly Wrap-Up

Even Ari Gold would have a hell of a time selling John Stevens to Ed Snider

Ok, after a two-week hiatus, I'm bringing back the wrap-up. Was limited on time the past two Fridays so I had to change the format, but now we're back to the wrap-up on Fridays.

A lot has happened this past week. Between the Flyers' skid, the Sixers laying the brown egg against the Celtics one night then coming up big against the Pistons another night, and the Eagles losing out on the Larry Fitzgerald sweepstakes, and yesterday's bashing of Mitch Williams by Lenny Dykstra, I'd say there's a lot to discuss.

So, who better to gift wrap the goings-ons in the wonderful world of Philadelphia sports news than the one and only Ari Gold of "Entourage"-one of the classic comedic characters in TV history.

Imagine for a second that Ari Gold is Ed Snider's right hand man on personnel matters for the Flyers. And, he also advises the Phillies and Eagles on matters. Here's a conversation between Ari and Ed Snider from this week.

Ari: Listen Ed, I hear you buddy, but we gotta give John another chance. I represented him and he's been a close, personal friend for 20 years.

Ed: Ari, I don't give a damn how long you've known this guy. He's a f***ing zombie out there. He makes that guy from Old Country from Old Men look like a godd**n Pat Croce. He's f***ing lifeless and the team shows it.

Ari: Look, he's getting on the players. He sees they f***ing dropped a big giant s**t against the Maple Leafs.

Ed: A big, giant, s**t! He blew up the whole f***ing sewage system and it's exploded all over my godd**n office!

Ari: I hear you Ed. But, let's not get hysterical.

Ed: Hysterical! I spent over $20 f***ing million dollars of my money this year to bring in some fresh blood. Look, Paul is flipping out about this team. He worked his ass off to bring them back to life and that godd**n Stevens is f***Ing everything up!

Ari: But, the players respect John. Especially after he had the balls to call them out. He'll turn it around. Give him time.

Ed: Look Ari, if this team doesn't make the playoffs he's getting s**t canned. He's out on his ass. Go down there and talk to him and fix this f**k up.

Looks like things aren't too happy in regards to the Flyers, but the Sixers are sitting pretty just 3 games under .500 and in the 7th spot. Here's what Ed and Ari had to talk about after their win against Detroit.

Ed: Ari, this is good news. The people are starting to care about the Sixers again! The ratings were at their highest all season and we sold out the f***ing arena finally when Boston came to town. It's a damn shame we lost, but it's good news to see the people care again!

Ari: Ed, good news is when your wife wants to eat box on your birthday. This my friend is great f***ing news!

Ed: Very true Ari. Very true.

Ari: And, look Thaddeus is a superstar in the making. I'd take him over any of the rookies that are actually playing. Hell, I might consider him over Greg Oden.

Ed: I wouldn't go that far-

Ari: But, you have to admit, we got lucky finally and landed a superstar in the draft. Now, we gotta get Andre to agree to a reasonable deal. I'll talk to him about that.

Ed: Very well then.

Here's a quick convo between Joe Banner and Ari in regards to losing out on Larry Fitzgerald.

Ari: Joe, you guys weren't going after Larry Fitzgerald?

Joe: Uh, no Ari. We just wanted to make these fans think that. Our stooges in the papers and G Cobb have been running with it and we just sat back and said nothing. We didn't even want Moss. It was all bulls**t. We just want to make Donovan and the fans think we're trying to appease them.

Ari: Joe, this is f***ing bulls**t. How are you going to sell these f***ing receivers to the people?

Joe: The people? You make this sound like a democracy. We have a license to print money. So what if a few fans cancel their season tickets. We have thousands more ready to jump in their graves. Besides, we are the gold standard when it comes to making money in this town. And, we can use taxpayer money to build a new stadium. That's the biggest lie in sports that you have to use taxpayer money to build a stadium because it can generate revenue and benefit the people. It only benefits us.

Ari: Joe, that's true. We all know that. Ha ha ha, but you can't in your right mind go into this season without getting a true #1 receiver. I mean you know the saying, f**k me in the a** once shame on you, but do it twice and you deserve to get f***ed back three times.

Joe: No, I never heard that one. Sure you didn't make that s**t up? Listen, Ari it will be fine, we'll compete for the division, maybe win a round or two in the playoffs and keep them coming back. Looks it's been 25 f***ing years since anybody has won anything in this godforsaken town. These people will be willing to wait another few years.

Ari: Joe, I'm speechless.

Now, we turn to a conversation between Mitch Williams and Ari. Yesterday on Howard Eskin's show Lenny Dykstra absolutely ripped Mitch Williams. And, he didn't get a chance to listen to the interview yesterday afternoon since he was traveling, but Mitch heard it late last night and spoke to Ari this morning.

Mitch: Ari, I could give a flying f**k what that wannabe Warren Buffet says about me. He doesn't even show up to the team reunions half the time and he's not associated with the team.

Ari: I hear you Mitch. So what that he thinks you blew the whole series. Everybody knows you didn't give up all 14 f***ing runs in those games.

Mitch: We win and lose as a team and that f***er needs to understand that. I want you to lure him to a restaurant downtown and then I'm gonna ambush that little sawed off f***er.

Ari: Where at?

Mitch: I don't give a f**k if it's at Applebees. I just wanna see him squirm and then I'm gonna knock his f***ing teeth out of his fat head.

Ari: I always thought he was a jerk off. This just solidifies it. Good thing he thinks I like him. I'm on it Mitch.

And, that concludes Ari's work from this week.

Shocker

Sixers pull of a shocker in Detroit with 83-82 win

Two nights after laying a turd in South Philly, the Sixers went on the road and shocked the Detroit Pistons.

They held the Pistons to just 65 shot attempts, and while they shot 46%, if you combine the lack of attempts, with 15 turnovers, and just 15 assists, the result is an 83-82 win by the gritty Sixers.

Big time win for the Sixers against the 2nd best team in the NBA, who many feel will make it to the finals. I disagree though because Flip Saunders is the NBA equivalent to Marty Schottenheimer in the playoffs; just an absolute rube when it counts.

And, the Sixers did it without Andre Miller for most of the game by having Rodney Carney of all players step up.

Big time win for the young upstart Sixers. Just a shame they couldn't do it against the C's at the Wach. That would have brought the house down and really got the buzz going.

Such is life in Philly though. I'll take a win against the Pistons though. They needed this one.

---------------------------------------

Flyers bumble again

One night after laying a brown egg against the Maple Leafs, the Flyers did it again.

What's worse than blowing a 3-goal lead? Probably losing to the same team again on the next night on your home ice.

The Flyers lost 3-2 last night at the Wach and were booed relentlessly.

And, that's just what the Flyers did.

Although John Stevens stepped up big-time by ripping his players (which most coaches won't do in the media) his days will be numbered if they miss the playoffs.

This was a team thought by many to make huge strides this year after an abominable season the year prior. And, they're hanging onto that 8th spot by a piece of tooth floss.

---------------------------------------

Lenny's making moves

While one former Phillie made news this week for going off at his kid's game (that would be Mitch Williams), another former Phillie is making major news as a successful businessman.

That would be Lenny Dkystra. He's being featured on "Real Sports" with Bryant Gumble and they'll discuss his success with a string of carwashes and his rise in the world of stock investing.

Way to go Lenny. Good to see a former Philly star move on up in the world.

Flyers Collapse

Flyers blow 3-goal lead and lose to Maple Leafs

Just gets better and better each day in Philly doesn't it?

Monday: the Sixers lay a turd against the Celtics after sucking us back in.

Tuesday: Larry Fitzgerald signs a friggin' contract extension just before he gets on a plane to travel the globe for a few weeks.

Tuesday night: The Flyers lay a turd against the Maple Leafs after leading 3-0 and blow the game.

John Stevens, who is the coaching equivalent of Bernie's corpse from "Weekend at Bernie's" actually showed a little emotion and ripped one of his players last night.

What next? Cole Hamels will---

I better shut up now while I'm still ahead, because I might jinx one of our players.

--------------------------------------

Phillies pitching approaching speed limit levels

Quick pop quiz for you? What's higher, the speed limit in a school zone or the Phillies' starting pitching ERA?

If you guessed the Phillies' starting pitching ERA you'd be wrong, but not by much. Their ERA this spring is 11

----------------------------------------

The man with the plan

Eddie Stefanski was on with Howard Eskin yesterday and was quite candid with what this team needs heading into the future.

He said they need another guy on the level of the "two Andre's" meaning another quality starting guard. That way Thaddeus Young can move to his natural position of small forward. Then, they need an upgrade at power forward.

So, how do they get such a player? Looks like a sign and trade is the answer.

Some guys to think about this summer are Charlotte's Emeka Okafor and Atlanta's Josh Smith.

I'm a bigger fan of Okafor since he doesn't have the character issues that Josh Smith possesses, but he does have an injury history. He only played in 26 games in 2005-2006 and 67 games in 2006-2007. He's been very durable this season playing in 63 games and boasts career averages of 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game. Nothing to scoff at. Michael Jordan is a moron as a front office guy. Remember he's the same guy who put his chips into Kwame Brown, Jarred Jeffries and Randy "I busted my knee every month" Livingston so I'm sure Eddie Stefanski could school Michael in a trade.

Not Happening

Larry Fitzgerald agrees to deal with Cardinals

Well, we can mark Larry Fitzgerald off the list of potential receivers to help put the Eagles over the top.

It has been announced on his official website just a few minutes ago that he re-signed for 4 years and $40 million with the Cardinals.

That leaves Roy Williams and Chad Johnson as the other potential targets and yours truly isn't too crazy about Chad Johnson these days in light of the recent uncoverings about him punching his coach and threatening to sit out the entire year.

After the Sixers laid a turd last night upon sucking us in, this just adds to the lousy news.

If the Eagles can't land an elite receiver this offseason then they're going to have to pursue Julius Peppers and assemble a Super Bowl defense. You have to be great at something to win in the NFL; you don't necessarily have to be a great team.

Shut Down

Sixers get shut down by Celtics, falling 100-86

The Sixers opened up the game flat tonight, falling behind early 15-0, but fought back to make it 44-44. And, then the Celtics took over.

The Sixers couldn't seem to hit the side of a battleship with a chain link fence for stretches tonight. Ultimately, they shot 32% from the field; their worst effort of the season and the reality is they looked like a team that was 3 games below .500 up against the best team in the NBA.

They came down to Earth in disappointing fashion against a team we all wanted to see them beat, but it wasn't going to happen.

The bottom line is the Celtics are among the elite of the NBA and the Sixers are just coming up. They have a ways to go and it will take a few moves for them to play with the big dogs.

It certainly didn't help that the Sixers' leading scorers (Andre Miller and Andre Iguodala) shot a combined 12 of 34 for 39 points. In comparison, Kevin Garnett was lightning hot, shooting 11 of 14 from the field and knocked down 26 points. He was a one man wrecking crew tonight.

That's the difference a franchise big man will make. And, there is a void in that department in South Philly.

Let's Get Ready To Rumble

Lets Get Ready To Rumble

Sixers and Boston set to square off tonight

Boston comes into Philly tonight with the best record in the NBA and the best D. They are on an 8-game winning streak and are sitting pretty with a 49-12 record.

The Sixers are arguably the second hottest team in the East over the past month, having gone 12-3 since February 5th.

We will get to see what this young group of stalwarts are truly made of. The Celtics are led by a first-ballot Hall of Famer in Kevin Garnett and play suffocating defense. While, the Sixers are led by a veteran point guard in Andre Miller, who is certainly a top 5 point guard in the game. And, the Sixers' bread and butter if the fast break.

Can the youngsters step up against this Goliath? We shall see. I'm putting my money on the Sixers tonight and look for Thaddeus Young to make his name. Mark my words, he will be a superstar within a few years.

The Sixers are set to go on a torrid 5-game stretch starting tonight. They'll then head to Detroit, then Chicago, and they will face the Spurs on Sunday and host A.I. and the Nuggets next Wednesday.

If they win tonight it will do wonders for this team's confidence and a young team like this needs a win like this to build on for the future.

---------------------------------------------

He wants to leave or not?

The Larry Fitzgerald soap opera is starting to look like a game of "she loves me or she loves me not" by pulling the leaves off a dandelion.

Just which direction will he go? The Cards are said to be adamantly trying to keep him, but at the same time the negotiations are dragging on.

They say they'll pay him the $14 million this season now because the cap room doesn't matter at this point (and that's true because there's not much left on the open market).

So, will the Eagles go after Roy Williams who is reportedly less available than the Yankees' franchise?

Or, will they go after the coach beater, Chad Johnson?

Decisions. Decisions. But, it seems that teams are holding onto their playmakers like gold bullion. They say cover corners are a premium lot. I say playmaking wide receivers are. There just aren't many in that elite class.

Otherwise, they wouldn't be elite.

Looking the Part

Looking the Part

Sixers win 4th straight game in win over the Bucks today

Don't look now, but your Philadelphia 76ers are nearly a 6th seed. They are now sitting with a 30-33 record

If they get over .500 this would mark the first time they'll have been over .500 this deep in the season since late in Mo Cheeks' first season when they were 30-28 on March 3rd. They then went on to finish the season with an 8-16 record.

Yes it's been two years since the Sixers have been over .500 this late in the year.

This team is for real. I'm on board after watching this team grow. Sure, I was on the "just tank it baby" bandwagon during January when this team was in the toilet. Of course, they were a bad team back then. And, something clicked since then. They have been on a tear since they started off 2008 in such horrid fashion. They are now 12-3 since February 5th.

And, today they blew through yet another team they were supposed to beat. The Bucks do stink, but they're a team the Sixers should beat and beat them they did. They shot a season-high 60.3 percent en route to a 119-97 victory.

This team is in the position they're in because of Mo Cheeks' ability to adapt to Eddy Stefanski's system and his point guard's play. Andre Miller and Mo Cheeks deserve much of the credit for the renaissance of this team.

And, I'm a believer now. I think this team could win a round in the playoffs with the way they're playing. They're playing as good as nearly any team in the East. Right now they're the third best team behind Boston and Detroit on the basis of how they've performed over the past month.

Offer In

Eagles offer Lito Sheppard and Reggie Brown for Larry Fitzgerald

This trade offer is almost as bad as the bad trade offers you receive in your fantasy football and baseball leagues for your best players. It's your classic "2 dimes for a quarter" trade offer.

If this is what the Eagles truly offered, then they must think the Cardinals are morons. I can't see the Cardinals even considering this offer. Lito Sheppard is the Eagles' garbage right now. Some will say he's a damn good player when healthy and I'll say that he's never healthy. Therefore, how good is he? He killed this team last year. And, now the Eagles are desperately trying to trade him because he's disgruntled and reduced to a back-up role.

And, Reggie Brown is garbage. He took a step foward in 2006, but last year regressed to the point where you wonder if the Eagles can EVER draft a wide receiver that is worth a damn. I don't think the Eagles will ever draft a quality wide receiver as long as Reid and Heckert are here. What leads you to believe they ever will get that right if they haven't to this point?

The Eagles are going to have to do better than this if they expect to land an ELITE receiver like Fitzgerald. I'd say Sheppard, a 1st, and a 4th round pick would get it done, but no way in hell will the Cards take two dimes for a quarter. This isn't fantasy football.

One and Done

Takeo Spikes gets cut after just one season

Chalk this one up to him being a disappointment or his high cap number this year (slated to make $5 million) or a little bit of both, but Takeo Spikes was cut yesterday.

He called into Howard Eskin's show yesterday afternoon and from what he said the Eagles wanted him to take a substantial paycut, which he would not accept. And, he granted them the right to seek a trade for him only if they could get it done in a few days. They couldn't so they made the move.

Spikes was yet another in a long line of players who were great somewhere else and then they come to Philly and were lackluster or in his case just ok.

I wasn't impressed by him at all last year. He dropped more interceptions last year than L.J. Smith has dropped clutch catches. He was a turnover machine throughout his career, but did nothing on that end last year. In fact, he hasn't been the player he was since 2004. He accounted for one sack last year, zero forced fumbles, and zero interceptions.

To really put this into perspective just how much Spikes was a non-factor, Stewart Bradley had as many turnovers in his limited playing time (one interception) as Spikes has had in his past TWO seasons!

I call this an addition by subtraction move. Stewart Bradley can play the middle, with Gokong and Gaither playing both outside linebacker spots. You have to admit the future looks pretty bright for their linebackers.

All in all, great move the Eagles.

--------------------------------------------

Jevon Kearse signs with the Titans

Jevon Kearse has signed with the team where he made his name before coming to Philly and stealing money for 3 of 4 seasons. I'll give him the 2004 season when he made a serious impact, despite notching just seven sacks because he really did impact the defensive in many ways.

But, for the other three seasons he was a bust, one of the biggest busts in the history of free agency. And, like the aforementioned player (Takeo Spikes) another player to come into Philly and stink it up more often than not after being successful somewhere else.

What the hell is it with Philly? I would be willing to bet if the Sixers ever brought in Michael Jordan during his prime he would've had his "down seasons" in his prime in Philly.

Even when a player does great here in the case of T.O. they become a madman and blow up their career here.

Instead of the moniker of the city of brother love I came up with a new one for Philly. Here it goes.

Philadelphia, the city where careers go to die. I'm going to copyright that one!

Get Ready

Get ready for a heavy dose of Adam Eaton

Apparently the Phillies shot down Kyle Lohse yesterday. He was willing to sign with him for $4 million this season. And, they said "no."

Perhaps, the tight wad owners are clinging to their wallets tighter than they ever have due to the extra $3 million they had to dole out to Ryan Howard.

Perhaps, they just don't give a (expletive deleted).

I'm inclined to believe the latter. So, because this ownership group doesn't ultimately care about doing everything it takes to win they're willing to throw Adam Eaton out there as the 5th starter.

Who would you rather have, a dependable starter like Kyle Lohse as the 5th starter or a disaster like Eaton?

Simple question. Simple answer.

The Phillies owners could care less. The payroll of this team is reaching heights of which they haven't been prepared for. They clearly aren't cut out for owning a baseball team. And, with players salaries reaching new heights, now is the time for them to get the hell out.

So, get ready for the Adam Eaton experience. I think I'd rather be tortured by the CIA than watch another summer of his awful starts or even see him appear in a game. He is to pitching what Jesse Timmendequas was to little children, quite simply a nightmare.

And, he will be trotted out there because nobody in their right mind would take this mess in a trade. And, he's owed $16 million of the owners' money over the next two years. And, you can be damn sure they won't want their beloved money to go to a complete waste (but it already has).

There's my first of many Phillies owners rants. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Andy Reid does interview on Howard Eskin's show

Big Red spent an hour on The King's show yesterday. He asked him everything from the importance of wide receivers to questioning him about spying practices.

Overall, Andy Reid didn't say a whole lot. And, why would we expect him to. Not like he's going to tip his hand about pursuing a wideout like Larry Fitzgerald or Roy Williams.

You can listen to the interview through this link. WIP has the podcast available on their website.

-------------------------------------------------

Among the best ever

Bill Conlin says the Phillies' fearsome threesome of Howard, Utley, and Rollins are among their best players ever.

I agree.

I know I'm a little subjective because this is the team I'm watching and my generation would agree that they are the best trio ever. However, can you honestly find a better shortstop, second basemen, or first basemen in Phillies' history?

Keep thinking on that.

Next Move?

Eagles said to be after Roy Williams or Chad Johnson

Michah Warren is reporting on GCobb.com that a "source close to the situation" told him the Eagles are going to pursue Roy WIlliams or Chad Johnson in a trade. That's if things fall through on the Larry Fitzgerald front; the Cardinals are frantically trying to extend Fitz, but if it falls through the Eagles will be lurking.

This source said their #1 priority was signing Asante Samuel and acquiring an elite receiver IS priority #2.

Things are going to be awful fun this offseason. The NFL's hotstove has replaced baseball as the most exciting offseason in sports, at least in this town where football rules.

Mr. Warren is a regular contributor to GCobb.com and has NFL sources, so this isn't just some internet rumor.

Andy Reid will be on Howard Eskin's show this afternoon at 3:00 on WIP, so don't expect him to say much about who they're pursuing. And, why would he want to tip his hand?

--------------------------------

Smoltz to Cole: "Chill."

John Smoltz told Cole Hamels to chill and not let the money affect him.
Smoltz knows from experience what it's like and dealt with the same thing when he was a youngster.

Hamels has really no reason to bitch. The Yankees, who are the biggest spenders in the history of professional sports renewed Chein Mein-Wang to a $500,000 contract. And, are they being decried as being cheapskates? Hell no.

It's the right of passage for all ballplayers. You earn your stripes, go to arbitration, and get paid.

----------------------------------

Iguodala wants "franchise player" money

Andre Iguodala is high if he thinks he's worth 15-plus million per season.

He's a nice player and that's it. A veteran scout told Phil Jasner, "he's a second or third best player on a team" and if the Sixers "had a star he'd be great."

He is not a shooter and not someone who can carry a team. He's a quality #2 guy. If the Sixers can move him in a sign and trade this summer than they should do it and count their lucky stars. Otherwise, I'd let him walk.

On the other hand, Emeka Okafor will be a free agent next summer since he rejected the Bobcats' offer. And, Chris Paul will also be a free agent next summer.

It would behoove the Sixers to just wait until after the 2009 season and go after Chris Paul. I used to like Gilbert Arenas (who will be the #1 free agent this summer) but his injury woes trouble me.

As far as this summer goes, if they can work out a deal with Charlotte involving Okafor and Iguodala then they should be charged for armed robbery, but it would be a great move. Okafor is what this team needs along with Chris Paul.

But, they'll have some waiting to do for him.

Close, But No Cigar

Eagles fall short in acquisition of Randy Moss

All along Randy Moss wanted to stay in New England, but it didn't stop the Eagles from pursuing him.

Reports from two NFL sources are that they offered more money and more guaranteed, but Randy Moss still said he'd rather stay in New England.

Perhaps, Moss and his braintrust engaged in talks with the the Eagles to light a fire under the Patriots' asses. Or, maybe they were just curious. After all, Moss and Andy Reid spoke at length yesterday.

Where does this leave the Eagles now? They clearly know they need to upgrade at the wide receiver position. And, they can now after addressing defense. They still have a hole in the return game and are said to be after an offensive lineman in the draft.

Apparently, the Eagles offered Lito Sheppard and a second rounder for Larry Fitzgerald, but they shot it down. And, reports are the Cardinals are trying mightily to ink Fitz to an extension. So, that situation all hinges on Fitzgerald's desire to stay with Arizona (or more money).

Should that fall through, Roy Williams could be had-maybe. The Lions have a piss-poor defense and Lito Sheppard could substantially improve their defensive backfield. Could Sheppard and a #1 pick next year be enough to land Roy WIlliams? Maybe. Again, it seems that Detroit is reluctant to part with their star receiver.

It seems that there is a premium on play-making wide receivers in the NFL. If you have a good one you try to hold on to it.

In recent years the only big-time wide receivers to change teams have been Randy Moss and Terrell Owens. One of whom was on the Eagles and the other who changed teams twice, but was close to signing with the Eagles yesterday despite loving New England so much.

Back to the drawing board for the Eagles. Keep an eye on the Fitzgerald situation. They said they wanted more than Lito and a #2, so the Eagles are going to have to bring the gauntlet to get him.

Stay tuned.

The Next Phils GM will be...

With Pat Gillick expected to hang it up after his contract runs out this season, the Phillies are going to start thinking about their next successor.

I think it's pretty obvious who it will be. Ruben Amaro Jr.

Is there any doubt? Every time a signing or trade occurs, he's the one being quoted. He's been involved in signings of players and their trades. One could argue he is the GM and Gillick just holds the title.

I think it's a mistake, because this organization needs someone from outside the organization to run the show and the man for the job is Chuck LaMar, who was hired as a consultant over the winter. He was heavily involved in the growth of young talent in Tampa Bay and would be just what this organization needs. If they have one weakness it's in their minor leagues and international signings.

Low Blow?

Cole Hamels claims the Phillies gave him a low blow by renewing contract for 500k

Once again, we have a story to put into the annals of athletes who piss and moan about being underpaid to play a game.

Let's see Cole Hamels has pitched wonderfully for a season and a half. Ok great. Let's give him $120 million for 7 years for his performance over the past year and a half.

Not so fast. Baseball players agreed to a system where they have to earn their stripes and go through some lean years and get to salary arbitration. And, then after accruing enough service time they can become free agents.

They agreed to this. And, yet they bitch when they don't get paid ridiculous globs of money after just a season and a half like in Hamels' case.

Cole Hamels needs to just shut the hell up and pitch. Talk to me when you do it for four years and the Phillies are still giving you a hard time. Then, you'll have reason to complain.

Eagles hard after Fitzgerald

G Cobb is sticking to his guns and says the Eagles are in hot pursuit of Larry Fitzgerald. He said they had a deal all but worked out, but the Cards' asking price was too high.

The Eagles aren't giving up though.

The deal is said to include Lito and their first round pick. Fitz will be the object of the Eagles' affection. They likely won't touch Randy Moss or Chad Johnson since both have character questions, especially Johnson who is threatening to sit out the entire season if he's not traded.

--------------------------------------------

Six teams are after Lito

The Texans, Saints, Bucs, Browns, Rams, and Jets are all said to be in pursuit of Lito Sheppard according to profootballtalk.com. Of course, this could be Lito's agent just putting this out there to stir up some interest. It's not quite as ugly as Daunte Culpepper's agent stating that teams want to reunite him with Randy Moss (like anybody wants Culpepper anymore) but it's an agent's job to drum up interest.

Sixers heating it up

Ok, I'm officially off the tank it bandwagon. For one it would be impossible for the Sixers to get a decent lotto pick even if they lost the rest of their games.

Screw it, I'm going to root for this team. And, how can you not? Andre Miller is leading a group of youngsters seemingly into the postseason.

And, they just beat my second favorite team, the Suns on the road on Saturday night to get to 26-33.

Who would've thought? After getting blown out by Golden State on Friday night and heading to Phoenix on a back to back, I was shocked to see them win.

Good win for the Sixers who won their first game in Phoenix in SIX years. They head to LA tonight to play the Clippers.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered

Eagles ink Asante Samuel to 6 year deal

It's official. The Eagles have signed the #1 available free agent on the market.

It's great news and gives the Eagles at superior playmaker at a premium position and now they have flexibility. They are strong at the cornerback position and with Lito Sheppard bitching about his money and getting hurt every other game they can move him for a position of need (i.e. wide receiver, defensive end, return man).

This was a heck of a move for the Eagles. They got the #1 free agent on the market and a pure ballhawk and somebody who never gets hurt. You read that Lito? Samuel had 16 picks in the past few seasons and has the ability to take it to the house. Just ask A.J. Feely about that. Samuel took one to the house against him in that regular season game this past year.

Asante Samuel talks about why he chose Philly in this clip.

As for the morons who called into WIP bitching about this signing, well some people you can never please. To say this was a dumb signing is sheer idiocy. Sure, they need to do more. We all know that, but they were aggressive on the first day of free agency and got the guy that they obviously had targeted for a while now. That's why they never tipped their hand in regards to the rumors about Lito Sheppard.

Brilliant overall move by the Eagles' brass.

Oakland pass rushing specialist Chris Clemons is in town today. He had eight sacks and 20 tackles in spot duty last year. He'd give the Eagles another weapon on the line and unlike Jevon Kearse, somebody who actually gets to the quarterback.
