Streak Broken!

Flyers' losing streak ends at 10 as Danny Briere scores game-winner in shootout

Last night at around 10:00 PM Eastern Standard Time the Flyers' 10-game losing streak became a thing of the past.

One Daniel Briere ended this most god awful of horror shows with a clutch game-winner during a shootout.

With the Flyers making it out of OT alive it stood to reason there was no way they would make it out of the shootout. The stars were aligned for another heart-breaking loss.

As if Saturday night wasn't bad enough (they were winning until 3 seconds left).

But, the fates had different plans for the Flyers last night. It was a tale of two games. With the way they came out of the gate, losing 3-0 I wrote them off. I didn't turn the channel but looked away and they responded with 2 goals. A high-scoring game perhaps? Not so. They ultimately tied it up 3-3 in the third period.

With Peter Forsberg playing games with the Flyers and the Flyers trading for forward Vaclav Prospal, they'll try to add one more player by the trade deadline today. Word is it will be a defenseman.

Eagles to target Asante Samuel

According to Peter King (and he doesn't just throw out BS) the Eagles are the front-runners to land Asante Samuel.

After seeing what Nate Clements got last season (8 years $80 million) I figured there was no way in hell the Eagles would be able to get Asante Samuel if he wanted more than that.

However, King stated that "he heard" Samuel could be had for 5 years and 55 million.

This would be a great move for the Eagles. Then they'd have to trade Lito Sheppard since he's not even going to make $2 million this year and pissing and moaning about his deal. Just imagine how pissed he'd be if Samuel came in making $11 million annually.

With that said, the Eagles could get a low 1st round pick or high 2nd rounder for Lito and pick up either a pass rusher or safety (depending which they get in round one).

That would be a great start. I'd like to see them sign Alan Faneca as well and since they're unlikely to get Larry Fitzgerald, they might as well load up on that D.

Gordon to close

With Brad Lidge being sidelined after his first pitch (that's a bad omen) Tom Gordon will open the season as closer. That's if Lidge isn't back by then. The timetable is 3-6 weeks, so on the optimistic side of things he'll be rehabbing back by the first week of April.

What's disconcerting is that on his first pitch of spring training he got a cleat stuck in the mound and re-injured his knee. After looking at all of the players who've come to Philly and been total trainwrecks (i.e. Danny Tartabull, Freddy Garcia, et al.) one has to be concerned that we're watching the same script play out. Player with success somewhere else, comes here, gets hurt and stinks.

Is that we're in for? I sincerely hope not because the Phillies can ill-afford to rely on Tom Gordon to close. As a part-time setup guy I'm fine with it, but they ask him to throw for more than 35-40 innings they're in for a long season.
