Is He Back?

Ryan Howard has 2 homers and 4 RBI in 12-2 romp over Nats

Don't look now, but Ryan Howard is almost at the mendoza line. Woo hoo!

With last night's big performance, which was was his best game of the year so far, Howard is now hitting .195.

He had 3 hits on the night, including 2 homers, and 5 RBI. Perhaps it helped that he went up against minor league pitching, but sometimes facing bottom feeders is the best remedy for a player to get off the schnide.

My friend Mark has been ripping on Howard all year. In fact, he emails me every day about it and asks me why I'm not more harsh on him. He jokes and accuses me of even being a cronie of the Phillies.

That couldn't be further from the truth. I have been ripping Howard. Nobody could defend his play and abominable defense this year. It would be like a vegetarian defending Jeffrey Dahmer's right to cannibalism.

After last night it is pretty clear that Howard is almost back from the dead. So, take that Mark!

Last night it wasn't just Howard who woke up. Bear in mind, the Phillies had just 9 runs combined in the previous four games, which rings of the old days of the Phillies who would stink it up on offense for a few games and then explode.

Feliz and Victorino each had big games of their own going 3 for 5. And, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley chipped in with 2 hits a piece. Pat Burrell and Werth each failed to join in on the bash party. Burrell, who has been stone cold as a corpse in Siberia, is hitting .271 now.

The Phillies travel to Houston tonight and the game starts at 8:05. Kyle Kendrick is on the hill against Roy Oswalt.
