Unexcused Absence

Shawn Andrews fails to report to camp by 7 PM deadline for "personal reasons"

In the first major twist of Eagles training camp, All-Pro guard Shawn Andrews is not in camp.

And, the team isn't happy with him either.

Reportedly he is not in camp for "personal reasons" and his agent insists that it's not a contract issue.

From what I'm hearing buzzing around he is not happy with his contract. And, since we know that truth and agents rarely go hand in hand the Eagles may have a potential cluster F on their hands.

Let's run this down.

Their best player on the team in Brian Westbrook is pissed about his contract.

Shawn Andrews is not in camp for alleged personal reasons, but we know it's more than that.

And, Lito Sheppard isn't happy with his contract either.

Nobody saw this one coming, especially when many thought Westbrook would be the one to miss camp.

The Eagles have a mess on their hands and they're not the only team going through it. The Chicago Bears are without all-world return man Devin Hester.

It's time for the NFL to revamp the rookie salary structure system. About the only thing the NBA has done right in recent memory has been their handling of rookie contracts. If you get drafted #1 or #30 you get slotted at a certain number and you will agree to that or you won't play in the NBA.

Roger Goodell needs to adopt a similar system. Veteran players are looking at the ridiculous money these unproven rookies are getting and it's creating a lot of acrimony and rightfully so. I'd be up in arms if I were an All Pro veteran offensive lineman like Jon Runyan and seeing some guy named Jake Long who nobody knew about before the draft geeks hyped him up receiving a $50 million dollar contract.

Enough is enough.

Another offensive stinker for the Phillies

Another loss and another pitching performance has been wasted due to the Phillies' inept offense.

To add fuel to the fire Jimmy Rollins is making an ass of himself by not only showing up late yesterday before the game and showing his displeasure about being benched yesterday.

In what started out with a season so full of optimism it's turning into a borderline implosion.

The Phillies are just 13-18 since mid-June and with yesterday's loss to the Mets (their 4th straight losing series to them) they are about ready to fall off a cliff. The only thing that may keep them from reaching bottom is that the Braves are in town who are in selling mode.

Therefore, the Phillies have what I perceive to an ETW series (easy to win) this weekend.

If they can't put up runs on their pitching staff then we can pretty much write the Phillies off as any sort of contender.

To quote Jim Mora, "Playoffs?! Playoffs?! We're just trying to win a game."

The Phillies shouldn't even bother talking about playoffs right now. Even though they're a game behind the Mets, they're not even in the same league as them right now.
