Braving The Storm

Phillies hold off the Braves once again after 2 hour rain delay

If only the Phillies could face off against the Braves every series. Then, they'd be as good as gold.

Joe Blanton's follow-up to his debut as a Phillie went worse this time around, but was truncated by a 2-hour rain delay. He gave up a pair of runs in the first and just before the end of the 2nd inning the heavens opened up.

Two hours later, Adam Eaton took the hill and didn't fair much better. But, the bats brought their A-game again against a shoddy Braves pitching staff.

And, what would a Phillies game be if you didn't scream at your TV set at least once or build up enough tension inside of you that you could pop like a balloon with a pin prick? In the 8th inning Rudy Seanez and Ryan Madson combined to give up 5 runs and suddenly we had a ballgame again after the Phils 12-5 lead evaporated to 12-10.

But, Brad Lidge came in the 9th seal the deal on his 24th save in 24 chances.

The Phils are idle tonight and will take on the Nats tomorrow night.

Utley is a little sore...

Looks like Utley has a sore hip. We all knew something was wrong with him since their June swoon started. His mechanics seem to be off and he just doesn't seem to have the same confidence in the batter's box that he generally has. Something hasn't been right. Gillick insists it's a small problem that he's fighting through. Doesn't that sound familiar?

Whenever somebody from the Phillies' brass says an injury to one of the key players is a "little problem" you have to think it's something more. Just go down the list: Tom Gordon, Brett Myers, Shane Victorino, and Jimmy Rollins-and you have to wonder just how serious this injury is. After all, his batting average has plunged like Starbucks stocks over the past month and a half.

Happ may be back.

And, word is that J.A. Happ will be back up in the bigs very soon. He was pitching extremely well in his last start and got lifted for no reason.

Usually that is a sign that the pitcher is getting called up to the bigs if there is no injury issue during the game, which there wasn't.

Andrews to be examined by a professional

Things are starting to come out about Shawn Andrews.

Word is, he'll need to be examined by a professional for this "emotional problem" and that there's no timetable on his return.
