Bottom Feeding

Phillies lose two straight in Florida and now are off to New York

You're probably thinking the same thing as me if you watched this meltdown over the weekend. Just what the hell happened with the Phillies on Saturday and Sunday?

First you have Kyle Kendrick doing his best Kyle Abbott impression on Saturday, which buried the Phillies before the 5th inning. Their offense showed up, but when you give up 7 runs in 5 innings and are playing in muggy weather the odds are you're not going to win many games.

And, yesterday the offense looked comatose out there once again when Cole Hamels was on the mound. Raise your hand if you knew that somehow this game would get tied up 2-2 and go to extra innings.

And, raise your hand if you knew once Clay Condrey was in the game that the Marlins would win. There is no reason in hell for him to be on this team any longer. Cut the cord. And, to quote Brett Myers, boom, outta here.

And, raise your hand if you were sickened by the Marlins celebrating like they won the friggin' World Series when Jorge Cantu hit that game-winner.

It's beyond the point now where they are in a slump. The Phillies' offense is deficient and until Jimmy Rollins gets it going I don't see them producing on a consistent basis. He's clearly having his worst season in at least five years and it's no wonder that the offense has been struggling to put up runs each game.

Ken Rosenthal insists that the Phillies were close to pulling the trigger on Matt Holliday, but the Rockies ultimately shot it down. The Phillies were said to be offering Victorinio, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, and Lou Marson for Holliday and set-up man Brian Fuentes.

I don't see any way in hell that the Rockies would do that. And, there's no way the Phillies will take on that much more payroll and then sign him for $20 million a year.

I also think Don McKee is on drugs if he thinks his scenario is plausible. No way Burrell goes to first and an AL team gives up a "top pitcher" for Ryan Howard. This isn't fantasy baseball.

I think a player the Phillies could get is Chone Figgins or maybe Willy Taveras from the Rockies, whom you might remember from his Houston Astros days. He's a base stealer, but doesn't hit for a high average. He plays good defense and he doesn't strike out every other friggin' time up to bat. He could probably be had for nothing. Another direction they could turn could be to Pittsburgh. Jason Bay will eventually get a big contract and big contracts and the Pirates are words seldom seen in the same sentence. You'd be more likely to see Boy George dating a super model before hearing of the Pirates signing one of their players to a big contract. Word is their asking price is high so the Phils may balk at that.

Don't expect a superstar to come here by the deadline. Not to sound like the bearer of bad news, but I have seen enough of this ownership's moves by the trade deadline to be able to gauge their MO.

With that said, acquiring Blanton was a great move. Now, this offense needs to be fixed.

The Phils are idle tonight and head up to Shi- I mean Shea Stadium tomorrow night.

The Phillies are too inconsistent, the ownership is too cheap, and our leadoff man has his head way too far up his you know what that year to be a serious threat to anyone. They shouldn't break this team up just yet, but until they prove they can do the little things to win games or get their pitching straightened out, the only team they are gonna compete with is the local softball team that Brian Startare plays for.............
