New Era

Flyers route the Penguins 8-2 behind double hat trick

Last season the Flyers were owned by the Penguins in a historically atrocious season, having lost all eight contests. This year the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. Last night, they walloped the Pens 8-2 behind a pair of hat tricks, which gave them their third straight win over the Pens.

What a difference a year makes. Last season the Flyers lost all of their match-ups with the Penguins.

The Penguins went into South Philly the up and coming team in the NHL, riding a 4-game winning sreak, with Crosby and Malkin the fearsome duo and the NHL’s brightest young stars. But, the Flyers handed their asses to them. And, the Flyers have some serious talent of their own in Briere, Richards, et al.

This game is reminiscent of the Eagles' romp over the Cowboys in 2000-the infamous "Pickle Juice Game" which marked the beginning of their winning era. They punished the Penguins physically in more ways then one. They didn't waste anytime taking the gloves off as the first fight occurred 20 seconds into the game.

Lupol and Umberger completed hat tricks for the Flyers. And, then the hats rained upon the ice from the crowd of 19,000 plus in attendance.

Lupol ended up with 6 points on the night. He's the first Flyer to do so since Eric Lindros, back in '97 when the Flyers last went to the Cup Finals. And, the last time the Flyers had dual hat tricks was way back in '86, when yours truly was just a little tot in first grade.

Welcome in a new era of Flyers hockey. It's going to be a fun ride back up.

And, a rivalry between the Flyers and Penguins has been born after last night's battle.
